DEN x ANDRE MELLONE

DEN x ANDRE MELLONE

When it comes to design, Edward Wormley's work really stands out for its perfect balance of form and function. We partnered with Andre Mellone of Studio Mellone to reupholster one of Wormley's most iconic sofas, the La Gondola, giving it a fresh new look while staying true to its original spirit.

For this project, Andre took inspiration from Wormley's design philosophy, which was all about simplicity and practicality. He went with a bold, contrasting fabric choice that reflects Wormley's practical approach making something functional feel like art. The result is a piece that respects its roots while feeling right at home in today's interiors.

One of the standout features of this reupholstered sofa is the selection of luxurious fabrics from Rogers and Goffigon. The main fabric is a linen-cotton blend in a soft, creamy taupe with a textured weave, creating a calming, elegant vibe. To add a bit of warmth and refinement, the piping and buttons are made from a velvety cotton-linen blend in a golden mustard tone. It's a combination that not only looks great but feels rich to the touch.

Andre's vision for this project draws from a wide range of design influences, from the clean lines of Mies van der Rohe to the artistry of designers like Borsani, Tenreiro, Aalto, and Prouvé. He's combined these elements to create a piece that's all about blending beauty with practicality— a hallmark of his work.

The inspiration doesn't stop there; Andre also looked to iconic design movements like Art Deco, Bauhaus, and Mid-Century Modern. These eras valued simple, functional forms that still managed to feel sophisticated something that's definitely reflected in this sofa's timeless

While trends can be fleeting, Mellone envisions a future with more thoughtful, innovative design and less of the trendy "polar bear-like cream-colored furniture" that seems to dominate spaces today. For him, it's about creating pieces with real character and lasting impact, rather than following short-lived trends.

What's more, Studio Mellone places a huge emphasis on the authenticity and quality of vintage design. In a world where certain craftsmanship has been lost, a vintage piece is like a work of art it not only retains its value over time but becomes something even more special.

With this Edward Wormley sofa, Andre Mellone not only pays tribute to the designer's briliance but also highlights the timeless appeal of well-crafted, meaningful design. It's a beautiful reminder of how history and innovation can come together to create something truly lasting.
